Head lice can be safely eliminated.
First: Get educated. You have time to scan this web site for information about head lice before you take action. Trust us. Head Lice are not jumping off your family's heads and invading every nook and cranny of your house. That is not the way these insects operate. Head lice like clean heads best, and die very quickly once they are off the head. In England, entomologists don't even believe you have to clean your house at all to get rid of head lice! We don't completely agree. However, most of the work you do to eliminate head lice will be on heads. The more you know about head lice, their life cycle and how they spread, the easier it is to get rid of them. Second: Be aware that over-the-counter and prescription drugs used to treat head lice are no longer very effective because head lice seem to have become resistant to these products. If you have used these drugs and still have head lice, don't use more chemicals in the hopes head lice will go away - they won't. Also, prescription drugs containing the chemicals Lindane (Kwell) or Malathion (Ovide) are powerful insecticides and could have serious health consequences and head lice have developed resistance to these pesticides as well. Instead, try using the olive oil smothering technique outlined in Head Lice to Dead Lice. It is a non-toxic and effective method for getting rid of head lice.
Third: If you have determined that you really have head lice (you checked for nits - lice eggs), the following multi-step approach offers you the best chance for eliminating a head lice infestation:
1. You may use a pediculicide if you so choose. Check with your pharmacist or doctor to choose the correct one for your family. Make sure to follow the manufacturers' directions. If you have already used chemicals and still have head lice, go directly to olive oil,
2. Use the olive oil treatment program outlined in Head Lice to Dead Lice combined with nit combing (use a good metal nit comb like The Nit Grabber) and manually pick out the nits. While a good, metal nit comb will eliminate most of the lice and nits, no comb alone, no matter how expensive, will remove all the nits. Manual nit picking is a must!
